Fiqh Council of North America, North American Imams Federation and Imam Zaid Shakir Endorse ISNA’s Greening Our Ramadan

Posted by on May 27, 2015 in Blog, General | 2 comments

Imam Zaid Shakir’s Statement “ISNA’s ‘Greening Our Ramadan’ campaign is a long overdue initiative. Our religion encourages environmental stewardship, while discouraging excess and waste. We are reminded in the Qur’an that those given to wasteful ways are the ‘brothers of Satan.’ Where does that leave the members of the average masjid where nightly loads of non-recyclable trash filled the dumpsters after our Iftars. We can do better as a community and ISNA’s effort in this regard is leading the way.”   Endorsement Letter from the North American Imams Federation (NAIF) RAMADAN MUBARAK Dear respected Imams, Islamic leaders, and members of the Muslim community, Peace be upon all, May the Almighty’s blessings and bounties be upon all and be upon our country. On this blessed occasion of the coming of Ramadan, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate...

Getting Green During Ramadan By Kori Majeed

(from MuslimMatters.org) Ramadan is the perfect boot camp for the soul. This Blessed Month is like thirty days of acting on New Year’s resolutions, only we are working on them alongside our community. What better time to focus on getting green than during Ramadan when we are consciously trying to follow the Prophet’s ﷺ example and create habits that will take us through until the next Ramadan. Green habits are especially needed at the masjid during Ramadan as we spend more time at our local masjid reading Qur’an in the musullah during the last moments before maghrib prayer, breaking fast as a community with a shared iftar meal, and standing steadfast through tarawih prayers. But there is something about the time between maghrib and tarawih when we tend to relax our spiritual muscles…and our belts. Americans could circle the...

5 Ways to Tell If Your Mosque is Successful or Just Growing By Maher Budeir

Maher Budeir is a partner at Balance Leadership Institute, a firm committed to helping nonprofit reach their potential. You can visit their website at masjidboard.com. The American Muslim Community is making a shift and is generally moving towards professionalizing the operation of our institutions. More and more, I am hearing the right questions being asked about the desire to run things better and to operate masjid finances, facilities and other services better and with more accountability. More and more institutions are hiring specialists to do facility maintenance, office work, in addition to hiring more paid Sunday school teachers, counselors and youth directors. While many have started this transformation, the majority of the mosques in the US are experiencing growth.  Unfortunately growth, by itself, is often mistaken in many institutions to mean success. The reality is growth in some cases is one of many indicators of success, but in other cases it...
